Finding Lye for Lye Soap Making
It has gotten harder to find lye for homemade soap making
purposes. In the past grocery stores and hardware stores stocked it on
a regular basis. But that has changed because of illegal activities more
recently associated with lye. But don’t despair. If you can’t find it
at the grocery or hardware store they are other sources to tap. If you
are lucky you may find Red Devil Lye in your local grocery or hardware
store.
Chemical supply stores normally have it on hand. You
can phone them and see. If they have it be ready to present your I.D.
They will probably only sell it in a larger amount. So be ready to have
a stock of lye for a lot of soap making. If you don’t have a chemical
supply store near you then can contact search the web and find sources
of lye. You will find chemical companies and soap venders that also sell
sodium hydroxide or lye.
If you buy it from a chemical company, the shipping will
probably be high because it is considered a hazardous material. They most
likely won’t ship less than fifty pounds. When you do find lye for homemade
soap making then be careful when you are using it; it is caustic. By following
a good soap making recipe you’ll get the right amount of lye in your soap
and it will be harmless after the saponification process, which is the
lard or oil combining with lye.
