Making Homemade Lye Soap

You just need a few simple ingredients to make homemade lye soap, when you make it follow all safety precautions. If you want to you can make your own lye. While making your lye wear rubber gloves and goggles. Simply pour water into woodash and drain the water off. This is called lye water. To make lye soap the lye water is poured into a container with fat or lard if you’re making the old-fashion homemade lye soap. Other wise oils can be used instead. The soap made from oil will be slightly greasy as compared to that made with lard. If you want to use lard, it is sold in some grocery stores. Or you can get it from a butcher.

The pot you make your homemade lye soap with can be made out of glass, stoneware or cast iron. Save the utensil you do use just for soap making. The procedure is to add the lye to the cold water; a chemical reaction takes place, which heats the water. It is best to slowly stir, so it doesn’t splash. Next, the lye mixture is poured into the lard or oils. Again, slowly stir the concoction. If there are lumps in the mixture it is caused by the fat and needs melting again, while adding one cup of water and another cup if necessary to make the mixture thick like syrup once more. If you want to make your own molds you can use glass pans, which you line with cloth. When the soap has cured for seven days cut it into bars.
