Molds For Lye Soap
There If you want to you can use molds from specialty
stores or glass cake pans, candy molds, plastic containers, shoebox, or
you can make one of scrape boards. The plastic dividers from cookie tins
will also work as homemade lye soap molds. You may use your imagination
to think of other containers for soap molds, but if they are glass make
sure they can stand heat. Whatever you use for you soap mold, line it
first with plastic. The soap will be easier to take out of the mold if
you use the plastic lining. When your mold is lined, then pour the soap
mixture into the molds.
After the molds are full then cover them with towels
or cardboard. Then let them cool and they will slowly firm up. The soap
should be allowed to stay in the mold for a minimum of twenty-fours hours.
After taking the soap out of the mold cut into bars, unless you used small
enough molds so it is already a little bar. Fishing line can be used to
cut the soap into bars. Cut the soap into bars before it becomes too hard
because it will crumble like a cookie when it is too hard. If it is too
soft it will lose its shape. Then sit them on wax paper or plastic and
cover them with it and put them where they will sit while curing for as
many as six weeks, but at least four. The uncured soap can burn your skin.
The saponification process continues as the soap cures. The soap cannot
cure too long and longer curing won’t hurt it.
